Installing a Hot Rod Air Climate-Control Unit in a ’55 Chevy Panel Truck

Most enthusiasts drive a newer car or truck for daily transportation, and we would dare say that most of them are equipped with power steering, power brakes and air conditioning. These are conveniences that most people take for granted and enthusiasts believe their street rods should have the same features.

Fortunately, the street rod aftermarket agrees, which means that all of these features can now be added to any old personalized street rod or classic truck, which is exactly what the owner of this ’55 Chevy panel truck did. He wanted to ensure that the truck was comfortable to drive, so he had a Hot Rod Air climate-control system installed.
Hot Rod Air has a unit designed for such trucks and the price of the system is reasonable. When Dream Cars told him what it would cost for installation, he was fine with the price and ordered the complete kit. The system included a condenser, a compressor, a dryer, an evaporator and all of the hoses and wiring required to complete the installation. The nice thing about this climate-control install is that no special tools are required. It can be installed with ordinary hand tools, a drill motor and a variety of drills. The only unique tool required is a fitting crimping tool, which the installation shop had, but if you are doing the install yourself, you could just as easily have the crimping done at a local air-conditioning shop.

If you have never installed an air-conditioning system in a car that never had one, you will learn that the job is not difficult if you follow the instructions from start to finish. Here you will see how it is done, as we attempted to cover all of the easy-to-see parts except for the wiring. Anyway, most of the connections are plug-ins, and as far as the wiring is concerned, that has to be individually run for your vehicle, but all you have to do is to follow the easy-to-read electrical instructions and route the wiring according to your installation.
We must add, however, that this installation was done using only the basic parts as they come in the kit. Hot Rod Air also has upgrades to this kit, such as a chromeplated dryer, a billet firewall mount for the lines and a chromeplated compressor, so it’s easy to personalize the looks of the unit as you see fit. Even the bulkhead fittings can be upgraded, as can the lines and so on. So, regardless of your intended outcome or how slick you want the installation, it’s still a matter of buying parts to go along with the install kit. Hot Rod Air can help you personalize your final choice of components.
