“The Grand Daddy of Them All,” The Grand National Roadster Show, unfolded over the weekend, captivating Pomona, California, with its unrivaled celebration of custom automobiles. With its inception dating back to 1949, this exclusive event has solidified its standing as one of the world’s most enduring and esteemed car exhibitions. Across several days, attendees were immersed in a captivating array of meticulously restored classics, cutting-edge hot rods, and bespoke creations, each a testament to the boundless creativity and fervor of automotive aficionados. From flawless paintwork to precision-engineered engines, every detail was meticulously crafted, providing an unparalleled experience for enthusiasts to engage with owners and builders alike.
Couldn’t make it this year? Fear not! Our coverage ensures you won’t miss a moment of this prestigious event. Dive into the highlights below.
America's Most Beautiful Roadster 2024
Beth Myers’ stunning 1932 Ford Phaeton steals the spotlight at the 2024 O’Reilly Auto Parts Grand National Roadster Show, claiming the coveted title of America’s Most Beautiful Roadster and a $12,500 prize from ARP. Check out our feature story on Beth’s stunning Phaeton HERE
Al Slonaker Memorial award
The 1959 Chevrolet Impala “Bespoke,” owned by David and Robin Rush secured the prestigious Al Slonaker Memorial award at the 2024 Grand National Roadster Show. Crafted by Steve Cook Creations in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the Impala captivated the judging panel with its exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Ken Reister's "Rodster" – 1932 Ford Phaeton
Ken Reister has amassed a wealth of prestigious car show accolades throughout the years, and he’s aiming to add another one to his collection this weekend with his captivating Phaeton. Likewise, Squeeg’s Kustoms, with a few AMBR awards already in its repertoire, is vying for further recognition. Ken’s stunning brandywine tub stands out even more with its Truespoke wire wheels adorned with N.O.S. 2-spoke caps, exquisite paintwork, and meticulous bodywork. Beneath the hood lies a formidable 302 engine.
The creativity didn’t stop with the car. We particularly loved the theme of the booth, which helped paint a rich picture of late nights wrencing, busted knuckles, and PB&J sandwiches.
Gary Holyoak's 1932 Ford Roadster Pickup
Gary Holyoak’s dark brown and amber brown Deuce roadster pickup is clean, and features a dropped and drilled I-beam axle, hairpins, a quick-change rearend, custom Indy-style wheels, and a blown Flathead engine equipped with Navarro heads from H&H Flatheads. The finned oil pan and exhaust pipes provide a touch of flair, making it a standout example of classic hot rod craftsmanship.
Ken & Tina Thrum's 1932 Coyote Roadster
This stunning Deuce has been a project in the making for some time, reaching completion just hours before its debut at the AMBR judging. Resting on shortened and pinched framerails, the Brookville body exudes classic charm as it glides atop a timeless tire and wheel pairing, boasting Mike Curtis custom wheels. Under the hood, a Ford Coyote engine proudly displays custom valve covers, adding a personalized touch to this impeccable build.
Jim Butler's "Tradition" – 1932 Ford Roadster
Yet another remarkable DIY hot rod, Jim Butler’s Deuce draws inspiration from the iconic Neal East roadster of 1961, showcasing the fusion of low budgets and exceptional craftsmanship. Jim proudly asserts it’s a vehicle “anybody could build.” The sleek jet black paint job, accented with red on the grille and pinstriping, comes at a modest $6,000. Complementing its aesthetic are Halibrand wheels adorned with knock-offs. Under the hood, a Chevy 350 small block engine is mated to a Muncie four-speed transmission salvaged from a ’64 GTO, embodying ingenuity on a budget.
Bob Mansonen's "Overkill" – 32 Ford Roadster
Aptly named, Bob’s Mansonen’s Deuce highboy is anything but subtle. This custom-built hot rod demands attention both visually and audibly. With massive 29×16-inch Billet Specialties rear wheels, a vibrant Molten Lava red paint job, and an 800-horsepower 500-cubic-inch Chevy big-block engine topped with an 8-71 BDS supercharger. A bona fide ground-pounder, this mechanical beast unleashed a thunderous symphony of power, reverberating through the very earth as it roared to life. Spectators could feel it in their teeth.
"The GMP Special" – Mekenzie Murphy's 1932 Ford Roadster
Mekenzie Murphy, at just 19 years old, is not exactly a new-comer to hot-rodding. In fact, she has been immersed in the world of hot rods since she was barely able to walk. Her journey began with a flamed ’36 Ford stroller in her toddler years, followed by a pink flamed ’32 Ford pedal car. Continuing with the theme, she teamed up with Alan Johnson of Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop and brought her vision to life—an AMBR-worthy traditional-style highboy.
Ramin Youressi's 1934 Ford Roadster
This stunning example of a 1934 Ford Roadster was built by Ron Jones Garage. We’re impressed that no repro parts were used in this project. All old parts were “resurrected,” as Ramin put it. The original steel Ford runs a Mercury Flathead for power, backed by a ’41 Cadillac three-speed transmission.
Brent & Stephanie Schieder's "Créme-briolet" - 1937 Cabriolet
The “Creme-briolet” by Dominator Street Rods, owned by Brent & Stephanie Schieder, boasts a custom IFS and IRS mounted on a Dominator Chassis. Powering this beast is a Twin Turbo Kinsler-injected 400ci Stroked LS-2 engine tuned by Rebello Racing, delivering an impressive 812hp. The interior is masterfully crafted by Sid Chavers.
Rad Rides by Troy's 1936 Ford Highboy Project
Troy Trepanier and the Rad Rides team’s 1936 Ford Roadster is absolutely breathtaking. Shown off in the nude, this ride looks stunning sans paint. What color would look best? We can’t picture a better look for this vehicle than how it sits in bare metal. We can’t wait to see the finished project.
Steve Scott's "Uncertain-T"
In 1960, what began as a whimsical cartoon depiction of a spirited hot rod and the aspirations of a teenager evolved into an iconic and enigmatic showpiece. Debuting on the show circuit in 1965, “The Uncertain-T” captured attention, earning acclaim from Car Craft Magazine as a “show stopper” with its unconventional interpretation of a Model T. Under Steve’s direction, it swiftly amassed accolades, including the coveted Sweepstakes Hot Rod Award, defying expectations even against competition from George Barris. Its fame soared as it became a nationally toured Monogram model kit, consistently sweeping awards at every show and gracing numerous magazine pages. However, by the 1970s, both Steve and his revolutionary creation vanished without a trace, fueling speculation and rumors for decades. For over 40 years, “The Uncertain-T” and its creator were deemed lost, presumed to have met mysterious fates. Yet, on November 4, 2012, Steve reemerged, resurfacing on Facebook, rekindling interest in the legendary saga.
NHRA Museum
The NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) Museum, located in Pomona, California, is a celebration of the history, culture, and excitement of drag racing. The museum showcases a stunning collection of drag racing vehicles, ranging from vintage hot rods to modern top fuel dragsters, highlighting the evolution of the sport over the years.
Street Machines: Then & Now
The 2024 Grand National Roadster Show celebrated the bold and innovative world of Pro Street, dedicating an entire building to this captivating style of hot rod. Pro Street cars, reminiscent of Pro Stock drag racing, boast loud engines, massive wheel tubs, and wide, tall rubber, delivering an unmistakable street presence. Originating in the ’70s and flourishing in the ’80s, Pro Street showcases a fusion of street-driven muscle cars and meticulously detailed show cars, each competing in an arms race of creativity and style at the event.
A Spectacular Showcase of Automotive Artistry
The Grand National Most Beautiful Roadster show is an exhilarating spectacle for any automotive enthusiast. As a spectator, the event is a feast for the eyes, with rows of meticulously crafted and creatively designed roadsters vying for the prestigious title. From sleek, vintage models to cutting-edge custom builds, each vehicle is a testament to craftsmanship and innovation. The air is filled with excitement and anticipation as judges scrutinize every detail, from paint finish to engine performance. Amidst the buzz of engines and the gleam of polished chrome, spectators revel in the sheer beauty and ingenuity on display, making the Grand National Most Beautiful Roadster show a thrilling celebration of automotive artistry.
