1958-1961 Factory Carb Listing

235, 283, 348, 409 Author Okay, okay! After listening to oh so many of you, we are providing information you have been requesting, and perhaps searching for, for some time. That information is carburetor data, information that we used to take for granted but that has become more and more difficult to find of late. It seems that much of this data for numerous models and years has somehow slipped through the cracks. This could be mostly due to the age of the information, plus the fact that many of those applications are more rare today. We suppose there are numerous other reasons as to why this information has virtually dried up, so we present a basic listing here for the correct carburetor number for the respective engine application.    Camaro and Chevelle data is generally more readily available than, say, that of the late-’50s and early-’60s, so this is especially relevant for big-car owners. Luckily for those with such interests, over the years we have managed to assemble this difficult-to-obtain information by rubbing elbows with those who had such information. Figuring that many of you would be searching for such information over time, we compiled the data for a later date. It seems there wasn’t much need for it at the time, as this information was no longer relevant because it was “past the 10-year rule,” or pertained to years no longer allowed in drag race competition.   We hope you will bookmark this listing, and perhaps print it out and share it to keep it as a handy reference guide (in your glove compartment) to use at the swap meets you attend to help confirm the correctness of a carburetor or fuel injection on any ’58 -’61 Chevrolet or Corvette.  Except for the air cleaner, the 230hp 283 V-8 engine looks the same externally, except for one thing. The carburetor number can be different year for year or by transmission. Ditto on most of the other engines. This ’58 fuel-injected 283 has a Rochester system with one part number. There was a mid-year mechanical change, so a completely different part number (as seen on a riveted, left-front plenum tag) was incorporated. We photographed this original ’60 tri-power 348 Impala convertible in Kansas. So original was the car that the owner removed the carbs for safe storage. Better to be safe than to have to go look for them on the open market. This is a fully restored ’61 350hp tri-power 348. Its carb numbers are unique and are not listed for any other Chevy engine. Other carbs will work but will not have the correct part number. A lot of guys today are buying restored muscle cars without original paperwork. In other words, the car could well be a clone. These “look”-stock Chevys can be checked for correctness with the help of this carb list. Some of these cars can sell for big money, so check out the little things, including correct carburetor numbers. For any of you who may own one of the very popular straight-six 235ci early Chevys, circa 1958-1961, we have included the correct carb number for each trans and year for your benefit as well. 1958 CU.IN.
