A Tale of Two Tensioners
This is a story about two tensioners, one fabricated with machine tools and the second fabricated in a garage with a minimum of tools. In fact, the only power tool you will need is a drill motor, yet the finished products will be almost identical.
Your first response to fabricating something may be, “I don’t have the necessary tools; I don’t have any way to get the materials I will need.” If you have a door number so the UPS man can find you, you have everything you need. The materials list at the end of this story contains everything you will need. The rod-end bearings and lock nuts were purchased from AFCO Hot Rod Parts. The aluminum round stock and cutting tools were purchased from MSC.

PONY EXPRESS
We’ve already tempted and teased our readers with a behind-the-scenes tour of the Unique Performance Shelby continuation cars—the GT 350SR and the GT 500E (Ford Builder, Mar. ’05, page 67). Many of you probably lust after one or both of these cars, but not all of us can afford to purchase one yet. And because of their limited numbers, their prices do, unfortunately, put them out of reach of many of us Ford enthusiasts. That’s the bad news. But there is good news; don’t assume that because you cannot buy a genuine continuation Shelby, you can’t build a car that drives just like one. Unique Performance sells not only the cars as complete packages, but they understand the situation quite clearly and have made available many of the individual parts and assemblies used to build their cars.

PERFORMING ARTS
Certain cars are stars. The ’57 Chevrolet Bel Air found itself in starring roles since the first car rolled off the assembly line. From its art deco fins and side trim to its potent 283, the car was an instant hit. Fans of the 1957 continue to follow the car, and the number of fans seems endless. Who could blame them? After all, here is a car that can play the role of a custom with ease, then turn around and be the baddest car on the dragstrip. Oval racing was a role in the early years, and today a ’57 Chevrolet in flawless original condition will draw rave reviews. The ’57 Chevrolet is so flexible, it is at home in any automotive role or costume. As a matter of fact, there are precious few configurations that haven’t been applied to this all-time favorite. Some ’57 Chevrolets have done more than one stint in the theater of the go-fast, and it seems there are no limits for these cars.

Corvette Expo 2026 & Chevys in the Smokies Take Over Pigeon Forge
The 49th Annual Celebration of Bowtie Horsepower in the Smoky Mountains.
Corvette Expo 2026 and Chevys in the Smokies Fill the Smoky Mountains with Horsepower
The Great Smoky Mountains are famous for the blue haze that gives the range its name—but during the 49th Annual Corvette Expo 2026 and Chevys in the Smokies, the mountains were a little smokier than usual. Some of that haze came from cammed-up V8s, hot rubber, and thousands of horsepower rolling into Pigeon Forge for one of the biggest Chevrolet performance events in the region.
For a full-throttle weekend, the quiet mountain town turned into ground zero for Bowtie horsepower, drawing builders, collectors, and die-hard enthusiasts from across the country to one of the Southeast’s premier Corvette car shows.
Corvettes Take Center Stage at the LeConte Center
The heart of the action was the sprawling LeConte Center at Pigeon Forge, where row after row of Corvettes—from early C1 roadsters to modern supercharged street weapons—packed the show floor during Corvette Expo 2026.
But the party didn’t stop with America’s sports car. Camaros, Chevelles, trucks, and every flavor of Chevrolet muscle imaginable filled the hall, turning the event into a massive showcase of Chevrolet engineering, creativity, and performance.
Park ‘n’ Show, Swap Meets, and Classic Chevy Muscle
Outside, the energy spilled into packed parking lots and surrounding streets with a huge Park ‘n’ Show, vendor midway, swap meet, and sales corral buzzing with activity during Chevys in the Smokies.
Spectators drifted through rows of polished show cars, aggressive pro-touring builds, meticulous restorations, and street-driven muscle cars while the sound of lumpy idle cams and revving big blocks echoed off the surrounding mountain ridges.
One of the Largest Chevrolet Gatherings in the Southeast
Together, Corvette Expo 2026 and Chevys in the Smokies once again proved why this event has become one of the largest Chevrolet gatherings in the Southeast. It’s where decades of Corvette heritage collide with the broader world of Chevrolet performance—from vintage classics to modern high-horsepower builds—all in one high-octane weekend.
Below you’ll find galleries featuring some of the Corvettes and Chevys that caught our attention, showcasing the variety, craftsmanship, and pure Bowtie firepower that filled Pigeon Forge during this year’s event.
