A Flared Beast For The Show And The Street

This car had us speechless at the NOPI Nationals. What started off as a teal MR2 with tan interior has turned into one of the baddest MR2s in the country.

A couple of months ago, I ran across some pictures of this Toyota while doing some research and scoping out the Internet. I was a bit in awe and as you can tell from the pictures, this MR2 is super hot! Does this ride look familiar to you West Coast guys? How about you on the East Coast? This car has been the talk of Florida and most of the East Coast since it made its way from California a few months back. This MR2 first saw action on the West Coast and now has been brought to Florida and done up with some serious new East Coast flavor.

Brian Hill is the proud owner and builder of this beauty. He used to own two MR2s back in the day and a  95 C5 Corvette, but when he saw this pristine silver MR2 for sale for a great price he jumped all over it. Like a kid in a candy store, Hill was ready to purchase this thing before he even saw the price. This is exactly the kind of car that he had been looking for and before he sent out the check, he already knew all the modifications that he would perform, giving it his own personal touch.
As I was walking around the NOPI Nationals looking for cars to feature, this one stood out from the masses. What surprised me even more is that it stood out in a very impressive Toyo Tires booth. That is not an easy location to score. Toyo always has one of the hottest booths at NOPI and Hills MR2 literally stole the show.

Even though I saw the car and snapped some event coverage pictures of it, I thought that was all we would be seeing of this MR2. A couple of months prior, I had been informed that the car was locked up for an exclusive photo shoot with another import magazine. That was fine with us, since we knew that this car was hot and we were sure that someone on the East Coast had already got to it. As Saturday came and went, so did another 10 photo shoots. I would have loved to shoot this car, but sometime things don’ t always go as planned.

Then Sunday came and the NOPI show was busy as always. By the end of the day, I had picked out my last two cars and the show was almost over. As I was sitting with our publisher, John Dianna, and our main photographer Scott Killeen, I felt a tap on my shoulder. Two guys asked me if I had a second to talk. They introduced themselves and asked me if I would be interested in shooting one of their cars. The second gentlemen introduced himself as Brian Hill. I remembered that name from my research … then I heard the words silver MR2 and Toyo.

I was like, say what? I told him that I heard rumors the car was locked up as an exclusive for another magazine. Hill said,  Hell, no. That is incorrect information, Mr. Tjin. I told him to hold on for a second as I went back to Killeen and asked him if he was up for one more photo shoot. I explained the story … and 30 minutes later we were shooting our poster car for this issue!

Funny how life throws you a bone every once in a while. Just like I told Hill, you never know how things are going to turn out in life. Luckily for him and us it all worked out just right.

As I checked out Hills modification list, I found myself feeling a little overwhelmed. I had no clue that you could put so much stuff into such a little car. Where do we begin? The killer motor setup? How about the sleek, highly modified interior and ICE? Or do we start with the sweet-looking, flared exterior?

Like any decent show car, the exterior is what catches most peoples’ attention first. This is how things work with Hills MR2 only it’s not just the exterior, but also the incredible motor that draws spectators, enthusiasts and magazine editors. Even though the exterior is incredibly hot, I think the motor may have it beat (which I say with some hesitancy since I’m usually a diehard show guy).

The MR2 engine compartment has it going on and that can very easily be taken as an understatement. Not only are there some seriously powerful parts under the carbon fiber rear treatment, but also some seriously high-end components. The engine modification list reads of like a Who’s Who in the performance world: APEXi, GReddy, HKS, TRD and NX are just some of the companies involved.

However, once Hill had all these parts sitting pretty in his hands, there was one problem: who could he trust to install such wonderful gadgets? After doing some research, he found Finishline Motorsports in Marietta, Georgia. APEXi had supplied a power intake and a Super AFC; also installed were a set of ARP head studs, GReddy intercooler, Permacool 8-inch intercooler fan, custom intercooler fan shroud and a Garage Fukui 85mm exhaust. Sound hot? That’s just for starters.

Finish line also went to work and had the motor outfitted with HKS SSQ blow-off valve, JDM CT-20b Turbo, JUN lightweight flywheel, NX single-fogger setup, NX N-tercooler chiller kit and a Shem’s Garage downpipe.

Hill also had Finish line install a B&M short shifter, 94 Toyota LSD, TRD head gasket, oil cap, radiator cap, Turbo Hoses intake pipe and silicone hose kit, a set of polished shot-peened rods and Venolia forged pistons to complete the engine buildup. For show points, he had the heat shield, valve cover and intercooler pipes chromed and a custom carbon fiber shield with dual fans made to keep his motor nice and cool. As for cool gadgets, his APEXi Super AFC is kept company by a GReddy PRofec boost controller, turbo timer, electronic boost gauge and an exhaust temperature gauge.

With his motor finally complete and more power than he knows what to do with, Hill decided to start playing with the suspension. Besides wanting to feel safe on the road, he also wanted to make sure that he got the good stuff for his baby. He knew that he needed a wide wheel and tire combo to fit inside those flared AB Flug fenders. So he called the boys over at Volk and Toyo and told them exactly what he was looking for. A couple of weeks later, he had a custom set of 18×7.5 and 18×9 silver Volk Racing GTPs wrapped in Toyo Proxes T1-S at his front door. The front Toyos are 215/35-18, while the rear are 255/35-18.

Next, Hill ordered his Tanabe Sustec Pro S-S coilovers and pillow ball mounts. For the braking side of things, he had a set of Power Slot rotors and Goodridge steel-braided lines installed. The final touches to the suspension are wicked. A set of front and rear Cusco strut tower bars were installed to keep Hill and his passenger snug on the road at all times.

Now, sharp readers may be wondering about the AB Flug fender flares. On an MR2? Yes, Hill has them on his car and you don’t. These fenders are just one of many things that make this MR2 so special. These aren’t wussy flares, either. They are pretty damn impressive and add some serious  man appeal to the car.

Besides the AB Flug flares, Hill also got the car a bunch of Bomex armor. (Is it just me or is Bomex showing up on all the top show cars?) The MR2 sports a Bomex front bumper (with the center hole closed up for originality), sport mirrors, side engine scoops and drift wing. TomÕs side skirts, Aeroware extenders, SPL front bumper extensions, carbon fiber hood and Japanese-spec clear corners complete the rest of the exterior goodies.

As for bodywork, this MR2 features some custom one-off modifications. Before First Choice Autobody in San Mateo, California, painted the car, the previous owner had it mold on all the body kit pieces and had the side moldings, fender line and emblems shaved off. For the final touch to the killer exterior, the stock teal MR2 was re-painted Lexus Silver with a touch of pearl.

With the motor, suspension and exterior up to par, it was time to finish this MR2 off once and for all. Hill knew that he wanted a wicked interior and audio setup to complete the full aspect of his show-and-go ride. Before I say anything else, remember that his car came stock with tan interior. What Toyota owner in his right mind would build a show-and-go MR2 and keep the interior stock? Definitely not Hill!

This guy truly knows how to build a show car. Out went the realbooty.com tan interior and in came the new black Bride-equipped setup. The first thing that Hill did when he got the car was order a set of black Bride Brix racing seats. He knew that these would put him over the top and add a special little touch to the interior. He also installed a MOMO steering wheel, leather shift knob and shift boot, a set of Lonza racing pedals and a set of MR2 aluminum doorsills.

The final touch to the interior came with a bang. Hill had a Stack ST8110SR dash system and an ST500 tach timer installed. The ST8110SR took the place of his stock gauge cluster and let me tell you, this was the perfect piece to complete this MR2Õs interior. Some pretty impressive stuff for such a small interior, don’t you think?

What is even more impressive is all the audio/video work done to this car. Most MR2 builders wouldn’t even consider audio, let alone video. Obviously, this isn’t your everyday MR2. For starters Hill had Traffic Jams in Buford, Georgia, install an Eclipse AV8132 DVD/MP3/TV head unit, a set of Diamond Audio HEX series speakers, two 10-inch subwoofers and two D7 amplifiers. That would be sufficient for some tuners, but this guy wanted to do just a bit more.

Next, he had Traffic Jams upgrade his stock battery to an Optima and the entire car was re-matted with Dynamat sound deadener. The crew also built a custom fiberglass tub up front and a custom enclosure for the subwoofers. Then it redid the dash panel and center console in fiberglass and custom-mounted the turbo timer and gauges onto the A-pillar.

So, does this MR2 earn your respect? It certainly leaves us in awe. I have seen some pretty wicked MR2s throughout the country and there are very few, if any, that can compete with this flared beast. As far as I know, no MR2 has ever come in or out of Florida that can touch this bad boy!

Thanks again to Hill for approaching us at NOPI your timing was perfect.
