In the hot rod industry Lincoln Electric welders are well known and respected for products manufactured to work and last in harsh real world working conditions. Lincoln Electric welders are used by many of the top professional hot rod builders like Rad Rides and Alloway’s Hot Rod Shop. Both of these shops started with and are still using Lincoln Electric welding products. Seems like product reliability and quality are known by some of the best hot rod builders of today.
Lincoln Electric is the largest welding company in the world. With over 125 years of manufacturing industrial, high power electronic equipment and over 50 years of making industrial inverter welders. Note the word inverter used here. Inverter welders use electronic circuitry to convert AC power into high-frequency DC power. It’s a basis of why Lincoln Electric has the reasoning to bring their knowledge of manufacturing their new Velion™ product division into the electrification EV world of today.
Lincoln Electric is based in Cleveland, Ohio, as it’s been since the early 1900’s. Back then there were a couple of electric car manufactures in Cleveland also. Actually, the electric car was more predominant than gasoline powered cars in that period, when Lincoln Electric produced electric motors and then their first Arc welders. You can understand how the use of electricity has been the backbone of the Lincoln Electric story from the beginning.
With the change of family generations ideals, daily news articles and with government backing for several years now, the electric future concept is happening. The hot rod industry has been broadsided by the Eco cry of trying to change the world into an EV lifestyle. It’s no wonder this electric-based company jumps on the new monetary flow as world government’s power down the hybrid highways.
Lincoln Electric’s Vehicle Charging division is named Velion™. The Velion™ chargers are the industry’s first American designed and American made electric vehicle DC fast charger. Seeing a plethora of names unfamiliar to most, it’s comforting to hear and see an American based company stepping up to today’s transportation challenges. Over 75% of the charger’s components are made at their manufacturing facilities in Cleveland Ohio. Internal parts of the charging units, like the computer chips are out sourced but the software programs are all created in house.
Like many people who have not owned or used an EV car or used an EV charger, there is one thing we have heard about them all. What about the reliability of the EV chargers to be working when you need to use one? Lincoln Electric says “it’s delivering the next generation of electric vehicles chargers with the Velion™ EV Chargers. Designed with industrial-grade components, the Velion™ platform delivers fast charging speeds with unparalleled reliability for the ultimate performance and uptime.”
If a hot rodder were to have built an EV charging station, we think it would have looked like the heavy-duty version Lincoln Electric has built. Now for the nuts and bolts information from Lincoln Electric themselves on the new single and dual Velion™ Chargers. Like ourselves most people reading this article may have a hard time comprehending all the abbreviated terminology listed below but here it is to inform you on the knowledge of Lincoln Electric’s EV chargers.
Designed with a focus on modularity, the Velion™ DCFC chargers are a distributed system with a separate power unit and charging pedestal ideal for public or fleet use. The Velion™ Single Cable Pedestal features a 15 in. LCD high-contrast touch screen along with tactile navigation buttons, integrated payment terminal, ADA compliant adjustable user interface, overhead status indicator light, and durable 12 ft. cable with CCS1 port.
