FASTER PASTOR
Keith Shuley is a genuine hot rodder and a bona fide car nut. In that respect, he’s no different from any of you reading this article, but what makes him a little different is how he spends his days. Shuley is a Catholic priest and a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy, serving as the Command Chaplain aboard the amphibious assault carrier U.S.S. Peleliu, the LHA-5. He spends his days filling the spiritual needs of those sailors, aviators and Marines who help keep our country free. But during his personal time, he fills his own need for speed. What a concept!

BACK TO BASICS
Simplicity is the key here, as this ’55 Chevy perfectly embodies the sleeper theme with a no-frills look and monster power. It doesn’t even feature all the stainless Bel Air or 210 trim you normally find on most tri-5 models; but even though this is a plain-Jane 150 devoid of trim, Ernie Lankford’s all-black ’55 certainly doesn’t get overlooked.

Revving Up Nostalgia
Every year, automobile enthusiasts and vintage car aficionados gather in Louisville, Kentucky, for the highly anticipated NSRA Street Rod Nationals. This event is a celebration of automotive craftsmanship, where classic car owners and builders from around the nation come together to showcase their meticulously restored and customized street rods. The show offers a unique blend of nostalgia and innovation, as attendees are treated to a mesmerizing display of vintage vehicles, creative modifications, and impressive engineering.

You chose a carburetor for a reason. The familiar hardware, traditional appearance, and performance all belong in the experience of owning your classic car or truck. But keeping those benefits used to mean giving up the convenience of modern electronic fuel control. Not any more.
The new CFI Enforcer Series Classic brings both together. This hybrid carburetor and electronic fuel-control system places an injector plate beneath your existing carburetor, adding supplemental fuel when needed. Your carburetor continues handling airflow and baseline fueling, while an electronic control unit helps fill the gaps. You keep the combination you enjoy and add precision where it makes a difference.
Easy Installation Without a Complete Fuel-System Overhaul
The Enforcer Classic installs beneath the carburetor much like a spacer plate. For many builders, the most involved installation step will be welding an O₂ sensor bung into the exhaust. The remaining work includes installing smaller carburetor jets, mounting the compact ECU, connecting the injector’s fuel supply, and completing the necessary sensor and wiring connections.
Those smaller jets reduce baseline fuel delivery, giving the electronic system room to supply additional fuel as needed. The distinction is simple: CFI adds fuel; it cannot remove fuel already supplied by the carburetor. A slightly leaner baseline lets the carburetor and supplemental injection work together.
Operating at 3–10 psi, the system allows compatible existing fuel pumps and low-pressure plumbing to remain in service. No fuel-tank modifications, high-pressure conversion, or return line are required. An electric fuel pump is necessary for automatic cold starts, while ignition-timing control is optional—you can use the system for supplemental fueling alone.
The Difference Is in the Drive
A wideband oxygen sensor monitors the air-fuel ratio, giving the ECU feedback to adjust supplemental fueling toward the selected target. During warm-up, changing weather, and throttle transitions, that electronic assistance helps address lean areas that a fixed carburetor calibration cannot continuously correct.
Even a combination that already drives well can benefit. Supplemental fueling can help smooth transitions and sharpen throttle response, working quietly in the background while the carburetor continues doing its job. For enthusiasts who want more control, the system also supports electronic ignition-timing adjustment.
CFI lists easier starting, smoother warm-up, improved idle quality, and more consistent part-throttle response among the benefits, along with reduced exhaust odor and improved fuel economy. The appeal is straightforward: more modern driving convenience, with the carburetor you want to keep.
What’s in the Box?
The CFI Enforcer Series Classic brings together the hardware needed to add electronic fuel control to your carbureted combination:
-
Injector spacer plate: Fits beneath your existing carburetor and supplies supplemental fuel.
-
Fuel injector: Adds supplemental fuel beneath the carburetor as directed by the ECU. The 4500 Dominator configuration uses dual injectors.
-
Electronic control unit: Manages supplemental fueling, with optional ignition-timing control.
-
Wiring harness: Connects the controller to the injector, sensors, power, and engine signals.
-
Wideband oxygen sensor: Monitors the air-fuel ratio so the ECU can adjust supplemental fueling.
Running a 4150, spread-bore, or 4500 Dominator? CFI has a setup for each, with the Dominator kit getting dual injectors. Just choose the kit that matches your carburetor and intake.
Your Carburetor, Only Better.
The CFI Enforcer Series Classic offers a fresh approach to upgrading a carbureted classic. It preserves the familiar setup and adds electronic control where it can help, without turning installation into a complete fuel-system rebuild.
Keep your carburetor, keep its character, and give it the assistance to make every drive more enjoyable. Visit CFIPower.com to explore the Enforcer Classic and find the right configuration for your classic car or truck.
